The Difference of Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus

Adware, spyware and computer virus share some similarities, one of which is that all three are major nuisances for computer users. Let’s differentiate the three.

Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What they do is that they create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.

This is why spyware are usually frowned upon and greatly avoided. They are more intrusive than adware. Spyware have their own separate executable programs which allow them to record your keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use including but not limited to chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings.

The spyware then will send the information that it had gathered to the spyware author. The agent will then use this information for advertising and marketing purposes. They even sell the information to advertisers and other parties.

Adware, on the other hand, are more legitimate form of freeware. Similar to spyware, adwares are advertising materials which are packaged into a software or program and are installed automatically once that particular program or software is added into the computer system. Some forms of adware, on the other hand, download advertising contents as a particular application is being utilized. It is quite unfortunate that most of the adware programs take the form of spywares that is they track and report user information to program authors.

Some signs of spyware infections include pop-up ads that seem to be not related to the site you are viewing. More often than not, spyware pop-ups are advertisements about adult contents. Also if you notice your computer slowing down, there’s a big chance that spywares and its other components have found their way in your operating system. When the Windows desktop also takes a longer time to load, its best to scan your computer for possible spyware infections.

Meanwhile, viruses are destructive form of software. They were purely designed and created for one purpose alone: to wreck havoc to your computer. They destroy whatever they come in contact to and will initiate self replication and infect as many components of the computer’s operating system or network as possible.

Nowadays, a lot of anti-virus software also provides spyware and adware scanning and removal utilities. Some programs, however, are focused on located and deleting or destroying spyware and adware programs. Whether is an anti-virus software or a anti-spyware dedicated scanner, they both search your computer and identify any spyware and virus installed on your system.

They then remove it as well as their components located in the system registry among other places in your computer. It is therefore, good to regularly update your virus or spyware scanner to ensure that your computer is protected from the thousands of spyware and viruses in the internet. Never be fooled from ads that claim that their products only contain adware.

These adware maybe spyware in disguised and are just waiting to be deployed for them to gather your information. Learn to setup firewall systems and always block pop-up blockers to minimize computer infection and ensure the security of all your computer files.

Vundo Virus

A Vundo Virus infection

Vundo Virus has been around for a long time now Vundo Virus is typically caused either by opening an e-mail attachment carrying the trojan, or through a variety of browser exploits, including vulnerabilities in popular browser plug-ins, such as Java. Many of the popups advertise fraudulent programs such as AntiSpywareMaster, WinFixer, AntiVirus 2009.

There are two main components to Virtumonde.dll which are Browser Helper Objects and Class ID. Each of these components is in the Windows Registry under HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, and the file names are dynamic. It attaches to the system using bogus Browser Helper Objects and DLL files attached to winlogon.exe and explorer.exe and more recently lsass.exe.

Vundo virus

inserts registry entries to suppress Windows warnings about the disabling of firewall, antivirus, and the Automatic Updates service, disables the Automatic Updates service and quickly re-disables it if manually re-enabled, and Vundo Virus attacks Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, HijackThis, and several other malware removal tools. Vundo Virus frequently hides itself from Vundofix & Combofix. Rather than pushing fake antivirus products, the new “ad” popups for the drive-by download attacks are copies of ads by major corporations, faked so that simply closing them allows the drive-by download exploit to insert the payload into the user’s computer. (Fortunately, this is hindered, if not prevented altogether by Vista’s User Account Control feature.) Its filenames are categorized by having the “hidden” flag set and being .dll files with 8-character randomly arranged names alternating consonants and vowels.

Symptoms of Vundo Virus

Since there are many different varieties of Vundo virus trojans, symptoms of Vundo Virus vary widely, ranging from the relatively benign to the severe. Almost all varieties of Vundo Virus feature some sort of pop-up advertising as well as rooting themselves to make them difficult to delete.

Computers infected exhibit some or all of the following symptoms:

* Vundo Virus will cause the infected web browser to pop up advertisements, many of which claim a need for software to fix system “deterioration”.

* The desktop background may be changed to the image of an installation window saying there is adware on the computer.

* The screensaver may be changed to the Blue Screen of Death.

* In the Display Properties Control Panel, the background and screensaver tabs are missing because their “Hide” values in the Registry were changed to 1.

* Both the background and screensaver are in the System32 folder, however the screensaver cannot be deleted.

* Windows Automatic Updates (and other web-based services) may also be disabled and it is not possible to turn them back on.

* Some firewalls or antivirus software may also be disabled by the virus leaving the system even more vulnerable. Especially, it disables Norton AntiVirus and in turn uses it to spread the infection. Norton will show prompts to enable phishing filter, all by itself. Upon pressing OK, it will try to connect to real-av.org and try to download more malware.

* Popular anti-malware programs may be deleted or immediately closed upon loading.

* Web access may also be negatively affected. Vundo virus may cause many websites to be inaccessible.

* Google search links may be directed to rogue antispyware sites, which can be avoided by copy and pasting addresses

*

Vundo virus

may cause webpages to fail to load after sessions of browsing and present a blank page in the browser instead of the webpage. When this happens any programs may also fail to start and it may become impossible to use windows shutdown.

* The hard drive may start to be constantly accessed by the winlogon process, thus periodic freezes may be experienced.

Are they really worth the price they charge?

Antivirus

systems are software systems that have been developed to protect your computer from viruses and other online threats. Web security threats can exist in a number of places – even on sites that seem to be relatively harmless.

What if, for example, you visit a website that has a trojan – a program that appears legitimate but really is not. Trojan viruses work by fooling you and your computer by hiding right where you can see it – just like the mythical Trojan Ware Horse did. The program will act like something real and legitimate, making you comfortable enough to drop your guard so that the virus can attack.

Most trojans are downloaded in the form of a software program or as part of another type of file. Opening these files, especially .exe files, will allow the program to begin its attack. These viruses will corrupt the data that makes your computer function and can destroy or steal your personal files and information.

Antivirus Protection

Antivirus

systems can see the things you can’t. These specialized systems can run special scans to search for abnormalities, remove them from your system, and send you alerts before a problem has the chance to develop.

Some antivirus programs are more sensitive than others.

The best will send you warnings when you visit websites that appear to have harmful code contained within the design. Don’t question Antivirus software systems. They will serve as your first line of defense when it comes to battling vicious computer viruses. Protecting your hard drive is certainly worth the investment.

Using a computer without an Antivirus system can be dangerous. Some of today’s websites contain hidden code that can be harmful to your Windows system, causing significant damage, file loss, or complete disablement of your system.

You should not be surfing the Internet without some sort of Antivirus installed. The problem is that systems designed for older versions of Windows may not be compatible with newer versions. You’ll need to make sure you have a new Antivirus program that covers all of the bases.

Using a computer without an Antivirus system can be dangerous. Some of today’s websites contain hidden code that can be harmful to your Windows system, causing significant damage, file loss, or complete disablement of your system.

The best Antivirus protection will include virus detection services and will immediately quarantine any file found to be malicious. It will either automatically remove the files or hold them until you determine they should be removed. You need to choose a antivirus program that offers a level of security comparable to the type of work you do on your PC. You should also consider the needs of anyone else who may use your computer.

Do you share your computer with children or teens? If so, you’ll want to get the strongest AV system you can afford. Children and teens are very likely to inadvertently download viruses while using the Internet, especially if they regularly frequent social media websites.

A good Windows AV system will give you the peace of mind you need to use your computer without worrying too much about malware, trojans, or other viruses. With a good quality antivirus program installed and an updated PC you can spend more time surfing the web and less time anticipating a huge computer repair bill.

Memory Fixer is also another fake diagnostic and error detection program, I had a customer call me, understandably worried because she was getting all sorts of error messages on her computer. She was the victim of the Memory Fixer virus. The Memory Fixer virus claims to optimize and fix your computers hard drive. This program will try to scare you into thinking that there are problems with the computer. The Memory Fixer virus can be installed by a Trojan virus that will show fake pop up messages or security alerts on your computer. The messages read that there is something wrong with your computer or your hard drive. Then it tries to get you to download a fake program that will correct these fake problems. If you click on any of these fake pop up warnings, The Memory Fixer virus will be instantly installed on the computer.

Memory Fixer will start up as soon as you start up Windows. It will Show all sorts of fake errors whenever you try to start up programs and even if you try to delete files. The Memory Fixer program will also prompt you to perform a scan of your computer, when it dose scan the computer it will indicate that it found all kinds of errors, Then it will indicate to you that these errors cannot be fixed unless you purchase the “fake” program.

A fake defrag program will show a message that it will need to be ran in Safe Mode. It will then trick you into thinking you are in safe mode by showing a fake or imitation Safe Mode background. After that it acts like it is defragging the computer. Keep in mind that this is all part of the plan to trick you into buying the fake program.

Basically this virus will make it seem like your computer is not working properly, Memory Fixer can also make folders on your computer show up as empty. If you open a folder you may not see anything listed, this is all part of the trick to make you think there is something wrong with your computer. It may also show you a different folder’s contents or make it look like the folder is empty.

The Memory Fixer virus will also make it so you can’t run any programs on your computer. When you try to start up a program it will prevent it from starting and then tell you that the hard disk or the program you want to run is damaged or corrupted. The reason it will do this is to make it difficult or impossible for you to run an anti virus program or tool to remove the Memory Fixer virus. Some messages that it may display are such as
Windows has detected a hard drive problem while starting a program or it cannot find a program, and asks you to search for it.

Basically it is trying to trick you into thinking there are many problems with the computer or the hard disk inside the computer. It can display a message like Windows has detected a hard drive problem, or it may show that it is Scanning for hard drive errors. If you get this virus try not to get too worried. It can be removed. Once it is removed the errors will stop displaying and you can use your computer as usual.

How to remove Paladin Antivirus

Paladin AntiVirus

Paladin Antivirus is another fake anti virus program that usually gets installed on your computer from a Trojan virus that is already existing on your system or perhaps has just recently infected your computer.

It is designed to scare you (scareware) into purchasing the full version of the fake anti virus named Paladin Antivirus in order to remove the fake virus threats that it causes to pop up on your screen.

Do not pay for it and do not provide anyone associated with Paladin your credit card information.
The paladin antivirus can be a bit tricky to remove from your computer. You may not be able to run any programs at all. You may feel helpless against this rogue program.

If you are able to get onto the internet while Paladin is on your computer then I suggest that you download the tools you plan on using to remove the virus before we get started. However do not install them just yet. Only save them to your computer, I like to save them to the C drive, that way it is easy to run them with out having to type out a long path name.

There are ways to remove Paladin Antivirus from your computer.
First I suggest that you make sure your computer is connected to your internet with an Ethernet cable, because some computer using a wireless connection, will not work in safe mode with networking.

Then start your computer using a diagnostic process called safe mode with networking. You can find a link at the end of this article to some support videos, one of which will explain to you how to start your computer up in safe mode with networking, but remember some wireless connections will not work when you are using safe mode with networking, that is why I suggest you connect with an Ethernet cable before you get started.

Once you are in safe mode with networking you still may not be able to do anything, you may only see a display showing the Paladin Antivirus, If this is the case then open task manager and end all processes that have your user name showing, except for task manager. You can also end the task explorer.exe as the virus could be attached to it so we should end that process. When the explorer.exe is

If you are lucky you may actually see the process running that is the virus in one case it was clearly named paladin.exe. If you see that use your right mouse button to click on it one time. Then click on “end task” or “end process” you may see a small warning box pop up asking you if you are sure you want to end the process or task, respond with YES.

At this point hopefully the screen showing Paladin is gone. But if you ended the explorer.exe task now you have another problem, and that is there are no icons showing on your screen. And that is OK sometimes. If you have save the tools to your “C” drive then you can click on the file tab in task manager then click “file” “new task run” then type in the location and file name of the virus removal tool you planned on using. Then install and run the virus removal tool and you should be all set. Let us know if you have any problems.

Win Defrag is another rogue or fake program that is showing up on the internet. This program called Win Defrag.
is similar to the many fake anti virus or fake alerts that can pop up in a window when you visit a website.

First a little information about the fake pop ups and fake virus alerts.
You could be searching the internet for anything, and the results may take you to a website that has been infiltrated by hackers. The hackers inject or modify code that is used on the website. Once the hackers have the code in place when someone lands on that particular web site, a pop up window will show up on your screen. When it is a fake anti virus, the pop up window may show you some sort of message indicating that virus’s have been detected on your computer.

You may also get this type of virus on your computer from clicking on a link in an email that has been sent you. This virus can also come from a link in your profile page or home page on Facebook or Myspace. The link could also be on a facebook friends page as well. Basically it can come from any link that directs you to any website that has been hacked.

So what should you do if you are browsing the internet and all of a sudden you are the victim of the hacked website? First of all Do Not Click The Pop UP! Do Not Try to close the pop up by clicking the “X” in the window in the upper right hand corner.

The best way to close the pop up window is to look at the task bar at the bottom of your monitor.
Look for any tasks that are related to your web browser, such as Safari, Firefox, or internet explorer.
Using your mouse Right Click on each task related to your web browser and then click close.
This way you will close the pop up fake alert with out actually clicking on the pop up itself.
If for any reason you cannot use this method to close the pop up window then shut down the computer.

Once the computer has been shut down, restart and then scan for virus’s.

Now more about the fake disk defrag program called Win Defrag.
Keep in mind that this fake program may also disguise itself using a different name.
As your are browsing the internet you may get a pop up message about disk errors or system errors.
These pop ups can be very convincing!
You may also see a fake display on your monitor that presents you with a screen that tells you something about a un mountable boot device or unmountable boot disk, or Hard disk clusters that are corrupted, or damaged to bade sectors on your hard drive. The screen may simulate look of the BSOD (blue screen of death) like your computer has crashed.

Basically these are all scare tactics to try to get you to purchase the full version of a fake program (Win Defrag) to resolve all these errors. Once these people have your credit card information who knows what will happen next!
So be careful and do not believe everything you see on the internet!

System Tool 2011 Virus
The system tool 2011 virus pretends to be a antispyware and or antivirus program.

Once it is installed on your computer it can be very difficult to remove.

One version of this virus will prevent you from running pretty much all programs except internet explorer.

System Tool 2011 may also prevent your computer from being able to start in safe mode with networking, so it makes removal of the virus even more difficult. If you try to start your computer in safe mode with networking you may get a blue screen of death (bsod).

The easiest way to remove this virus is to start your computer in safe mode with networking, see this video for safemode with networking.
Once in safe mode with networking you can run any programs needed to remove the virus. If your not comfortable removing the virus we can do this for you at a very affordable rate of $35.00.
Simply visit our virus removal support page and contact a technician via live help and they will assist you to connect to the help desk.

You may also notice that you cannot open the task manager in an attempt to detect the virus process and stop it.
The virus will prevent that from starting as well You may be trying other things like starting a command prompt window it may also be stopped by the virus.

When your computer is infected with the security tool 2011 virus you will see some pop ups or virus alerts on your screen. These get in the way of your work and can be very annoying.

If you try to download a virus removal utility or a program the virus will not let it run.

What you can do is download any virus removal software tools that you plan on using and save them to your desktop but DO NOT run them yet. You need to stop the virus process from running on your computer before you attempt to run any virus removal tools or programs.

So what can you do to try to stop this virus? One method I use is to run a program that shows all of the processes that are running on the computer, called cprocess.exe However when the virus is not letting you run any programs except internet explorer what can you do?

What you can do is, try renaming your program that you want to run to iexplore.exe this way the virus will think you are starting internet explorer and it may allow it to run.

If it will allow it to run then you are in luck. What you will want to do is try to detect the virus process that is
running and stop or kill that process. You may also be able to determine the location of the virus file as well.
Knowing the location of the file can be useful as you may find out that you need to manually delete the file.

When looking for a virus process running on your computer it may be some sort of random name that looks like gibberish.

Anyway once you have killed or stopped the virus process from running on your computer you can try to run the anti virus that you have installed If that fails you should the tools that you downloaded to your computer that are commonly used to remove virus’s from computers.

If it seems like the virus is removed after running the removal tools and restarting your computer and you get an occasional error like a system host32 error then you may still have another hidden virus on your computer call a root kit. Many new virus’s are hiding in the master boot record of your hard drive and can be difficult to remove. You should seek help by an experienced technician to help remove that sort of virus. A root kit virus is normally undetectable by anti virus programs and some virus removal tools.
